VELOCIOUS EDGE
Jeff’s journey began with a simple idea. Around 2004, he started brainstorming a front-wheel-drive, three-wheeled trike featuring a front-steering system and a minimalist drivetrain. Having previously ridden front-wheel-drive recumbents, he appreciated their efficiency—free from long chains and drive rollers.
In 2023, Jeff decided to bring his long-standing concept to life and created Velocious Edge. His goal was to preserve the efficiency of the design while incorporating his own innovations, such as a frameless, infused shell. With access to parts of the original Kyle Edge molds, he used them as a starting point to develop a trike-specific shape. Unlike the two-wheeled Kyle Edge (one front and one rear wheel), Jeff’s design featured two wheels in the front. He envisioned a slim, aerodynamic body that could deliver high performance with minimal power input.
Driven by a passion for learning and problem-solving, Jeff dove into the world of epoxy infusion and composite materials. He studied extensively before taking on the task of infusing carbon fiber and Kevlar himself. Through self-teaching, he created the molds and infused the entire trike shell using only carbon and Kevlar, resulting in a lightweight yet structurally robust vehicle.
He applied the same techniques to internal components, supplementing them with laser cut alloy and 3D-printed parts, including the camera housing. Once the trike was structurally complete, Jeff engineered a dual-camera, dual-screen vision system, allowing the fully enclosed rider to operate the trike with minimal external drag.
By 2025, Jeff was ready to put Velocious to the test—taking it to the Lang Lang Proving Ground to see his vision in action.
Velocious Edge was Jeff’s first full trike build using Carbon Fiber and Kevlar infusion. With no metal framework in the trike, Velocious was created to be a light weight speedbike, built with strong materials in a sleek, attractive, and functional form.
As soon as Jeff took Velocious out on the track, he immediately sensed its potential—both in sound and performance. During testing, he closely monitored his speed, power output, and heart rate, ensuring a consistent and efficient ride. Visibility was excellent, with both screens providing a clear view of the road ahead, allowing him to keep a close eye on his performance metrics.
He quickly discovered that he could maintain speeds of 60 km/h, then 70 km/h, and even up to 75 km/h, all while keeping his breathing steady and his heart rate within his optimal range. He didn’t feel physically strained, and it was clear that the trike was capable of achieving even higher speeds under ideal conditions. Velocious was not only responsive and enjoyable to ride but also received praise from spectators for its smooth performance and impressive sound.
Jeff believes that in a location like Battle Mountain, Nevada—a known hotspot for high-speed cycling attempts—the trike could potentially reach speeds of 110 to 120 km/h, based on how it performed during testing. However, crosswinds during his session prevented him from making a full-effort hour attempt. Despite this, Jeff's experience at places like the Ford Proving Ground and the Lang Lang Proving Ground in Victoria has shown that Velocious is more than capable of setting records in the right environment.
After completing his tests, Jeff is confident that Velocious Edge has the potential to break 1, 6, 12, and even 24-hour records—provided the rider is up for the challenge and comfortable staring at a screen for extended periods!
Jeff’s personal output numbers in Velocious for the day were:
60km hour at 140 to 150 watts
75km hour at 200 to 220 watts
These watt numbers are based on Jeff’s extensive knowledge of his own power and heart rate data.
Jeff has applied everything he had learned creating Velocious to his next projects—Pedal Prix Trikes—incorporating the same core principles: front-wheel drive, lightweight design, and streamlined epoxy-infused monocoque shells built for speed. Visit the Pedal Prix Trikes page to learn more.
